Carers and families receive much needed support to connect, learn and grow

New Carer's Café Plus workshops hosted by our partner, Families Supporting Families (FSF), helping Hunter families and carers of children with special needs to overcome social isolation and build strong social networks to better support their children.

Carers and families of children with a disability often feel socially isolated and overwhelmed with the complex and difficult circumstances associated with supporting a child with special needs.

As such, it is important that carers and families of children with special needs surround themselves with a strong support network. nib foundation partner, Families Supporting Families (FSF), is helping carers in the Hunter overcome the sense of social isolation and build networks through their new Carer's Café Plus workshops.

The program provides carers with a supportive environment that combines education with the invaluable benefits of sharing and learning from the experiences of other people in similar situations. This can help participants build their own resilience as well as capacity to support their child's needs.

Funding support from nib foundation will enable FSF to hold six informal Carer's Café gatherings and an annual dinner in 2015, in addition to the workshops.

The next Carer's Café Plus workshop will be held on Thursday 21 May in Newcastle. Guest speaker, Craig Moore is a clinical psychologist who is highly experienced in working with children and adolescents. He will address the complexities associated with the use of technology with the aim of helping parents and carers to feel more confident in their approach to its use in the home.
