Disadvantaged Australians have higher levels of disease risk factors and lower use of preventative health services than those who experience socio-economic advantage. Better Health Victoria promotes cycling as one of the best ways to reduce the risk of health problems.
Good Cycles is a not for profit social enterprise with a mission to use bicycles to create meaningful and lasting opportunities for people and communities in need.
Using bicycle-related services and activities to create social good, Good Cycles provide ongoing work opportunities and direct support for people in inner-city Melbourne experiencing long-term unemployment and disadvantage.
Our funding will assist Good Cycles to develop Cycle Smart, a bike education and work experience training program to engage young people in bicycle riding and bicycle maintenance with the aim of transitioning young people into further education or jobs in bicycle maintenance. During 2015 we will be helping Good Cycles to engage and work with up to 45 disengaged young people in inner-city Melbourne through their eight-week bike education training program.
Cycle Smart will use bicycles and bicycle programs as engagement tools to create healthier, happier and more connected youth, tackling issues such as obesity, diabetes, anxiety, depression and social isolation through active participation in these courses.
