Down Syndrome Association of Victoria

Navigating the education system

Funding Dates

December 2015 - December 2016

The issue

Down syndrome is the most common genetic disability, occurring in one of every 700-900 births in every country of the world. Down Syndrome Victoria is the statewide peak membership organisation working alongside people with Down syndrome and their families, so that they may reach their full potential and live the lives they choose.

Selecting appropriate education options for children with Down syndrome can be stressful and challenging for a parent. Down Syndrome Victoria has identified a need to provide information and support services that better prepares parents to start the process of choosing a school and arranging funding.

The project

Through our funding support Down Syndrome Victoria will deliver six, parent and carer workshops and develop a resource guide for parents to use throughout the years their child is at school. The program will prepare parents for the often overwhelming education system. It will cover topics such as choosing an appropriate school, understanding the funding options available, tips to surviving the school years and planning for a future beyond school.

For a parent of a child with Down syndrome these stages are often extremely stressful, but with the right advice and information the process can be positive and ultimately lead to a successful school experience for the student with Down syndrome.

The impact

The program will help parents and carers to feel confident when supporting their child through the education system to build their health, resilience and wellbeing.
