Dungog Shire Community Centre

Project Bounce Forward

Dungog, NSW

Funding Dates

June 2015 - December 2016

The Issue

The small township of Dungog was left devastated by the unprecedented floods that hit the Hunter region on 21 April 2015, with 82 homes left severely damaged or destroyed, 139 individuals forced to evacuate their homes, and tragically, three people lost their life.

The Dungog Shire Community Centre has been integral to the recovery effort since the floods hit and as the community now looks to rebuild, the locally based centre continues to provide much needed speciality support services to those affected by the natural disaster.

The Project

Now that the immediate crisis is over, we are very pleased to contribute to the medium to long term recovery effort by providing an out of round grant that will help the Dungog Shire Community Centre in rolling out 'Project Bounce Forward' over the next 12 months. The funding from nib foundation will support the Community Renewal element of this initiative, with a Project Officer to be employed part-time to deliver a range of community events and activities, and also create pathways to information and services.

This dedicated community renewal resource will focus on information sharing, linkage and capacity building, restoring the health and wellbeing of the broader community, and will complement the individual case management undertaken by Dungog Shire Community Centre.

“In order for the community to recover, individuals need to be supported, connected and nurtured. Many pathways are needed to help re-build their lives, homes and community. This process can be overwhelming and tiring at times. Evidence shows that specific clinical and support structures need to be developed, created or made available to address the specific needs of those impacted by such a major life changing event.”
