According to Health Statistics NSW, the Hunter New England area has the highest rate of births to mothers under 19 years across the state. A gap currently exists for young parents in the region, in terms of access to services that help build social connections, support networks, as well as exposure to parenting education and information.
The Place is a centrally located, accessible community centre that facilitates and enables participant-led activities to build social connections and a culture of respect and resilience across the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie region. Having previously identified the service gap relating to young parents, The Place formed the Young Parents Group that has already benefited over 100 families; however, initial funding for the program has since lapsed.
Young Parents Group is a collaborative multi-agency model that supports young mums and dads up to 25 years of age, to improve their mental and social wellbeing and build their capacity as parents.
Our support will reinstate the already proven successful program, allowing young parents free access to weekly sessions covering educational workshops, guest speakers, peer support activities and mentoring opportunities.
Around 50 families will participate in the group under a facilitated model, which will deliver advice, guidance, as well as a sense of safety, and comfort that has previously demonstrated to have a lasting impact on participants.
The Young Parents Group will also result in improved connections to community and services for participants helping to increase their resilience and capacity to achieve sustained physical, mental and social wellbeing for themselves and their children.
