Upskilling Volunteer Carers

Funding Dates

November 2017 - December 2018

The issue

In 2016, almost 7,000 children aged between 0-13 years were registered to be involved with Camp Quality's Kids' Camps, Fun Days, Family Camps and Retreats which are offered by Camp Quality at no cost, to children who are impacted by cancer, and their families.

At the backbone of these events are volunteers. Volunteer carers provide valuable time, knowledge and energy to help deliver services to local communities. In addition, first aid and medical volunteers ensure participants' safety at all Camp Quality activities. However, ongoing investment is needed to enable upskilling of volunteers in both urban and regional areas of NSW and the ACT.

The project

Camp Quality will use this nib foundation Community Grant to provide professionally delivered life guarding and first aid training to volunteers and camp leaders in Sydney, Newcastle, Coffs Harbour, Illawarra and Woden.

Child safety is the highest priority at Camp Quality and they are committed to providing a fun and safe environment for children and their families at every event. The training provided will ensure volunteers are kept up-to-date with current policies and procedures and are equipped with the skills and confidence imperative to assessing and managing risks, preventing incidents and creating a safe environment at all Camp Quality events.

The impact

Camp Quality'slifeguard and first aid training courses will provide an increased number of skilled volunteer carers available for involvement in Camp Quality programs and events across NSW and the ACT. This will help build Camp Quality's capacity to provide water-related activities.

Around 118,400 hours have been donated to Camp Quality by volunteer carers over the past 18 months. The upskilling of volunteers will be offered in areas where these skills are most in demand. As a result, Camp Quality will have the opportunity to deliver more water based events, create a safe space for participants and ensure volunteers safety training and knowledge remains current.
